I wish I could say I was the kind of child
who watched the moon from her window,
would turn toward it and wonder.
I never wondered. I read. Dark signs
that crawled toward the edge of the page.
It took me years to grow a heart
from paper and glue. All I had
was a flashlight, bright as the moon,
a white hole blazing beneath the sheets.
~ Dorianne Laux
I like that the verses here are completely contrary to what one presumes when reading the title, which is that the POV is that of someone who *does* stare at the moon.

I agree – its a startling poem in that way. I read it expecting to read about the moon in the window, but I could relate to the books being read by flashlight – although I have to say that I was also a big dreamer, so probably did look at the moon in the window too!

I like the poem…minimal yet thought provoking. I thought at first based on the title it talked about the moon. Honestly? I had to read it again!!!
