My Favourite Book

What do you do when you’re as much of a reader as I am and have to choose a favourite book for a tag? Well, you go back to the beginning, to find the book that sparked it all and began your love affair with books. I was 11 years old when I started reading avidly – I had always loved reading but I think this was the point of no return. I used books as a escape, as as fuel to an imaginary dream world.

The book that made me fall in love with reading and writing is undoubtedly Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. I re-read this for the umpteenth time over the last few days and I can definitely say that every reading I give to it makes me fall in love with it all over again. It’s just such a brilliant book full of sharp character portraits, character changes and a feisty main character. Elizabeth Bennet was my heroine for so long – when I was having a hard time, I would escape and read the book again or watch the Pride and Prejudice BBC series (by the way, it’s still excellent – and definitely iconic). The recent film with Keira Knightley is lovely, but there are bits of both, the series and the film that are wonderful and I couldn’t pick which I like the best! The shots in the film are beautiful and romantic, whereas the character acting in the series is spot on.

I guess it’s surprising considering how much I love sci fi and fantasy but everyone has one or two of those books that means more to them than just entertainment and knowledge.
