Line and Wash: Cat with Plant and Books

For my sister’s birthday this year, I drew and painted a scene with a cat, toppled over plant pot, and a bookcase with some of her favourite books. There’s a lot of yellow and blue as they’re her favourite colours.

I originally wanted it to be a card, but decided to go all in and paint it on 100% cotton Arches paper. I don’t have a lot of it and only bought two pads in a sale, specifically for finalised and special drawings like this – to give away or have as long-lasting paintings. It was so beautiful to work with and I’m looking forward to painting with it more.

I’ve only drawn cats twice so far, and have used YouTube tutorials and reference images – I found videos by Mink: The Drawing Researcher incredibly useful as he goes through different poses, emotions, and breeds. I haven’t tried drawing or painting any other animals so far!

I’ve signed back up to Skillshare as they’re offering their monthly plans again. It’s a little bit more than I’d usually pay for a subscription but I’m also hoping it’ll be helpful both for learning more about watercolour and line and wash, and also for writing inspiration this month. I love YouTube and there’s a lot of choice for learning – I can always share my favourite watercolour and drawing accounts here this month – but I wanted something a little more structured when I know I have so much to learn!
