Every animal I’ve loved
has taught me something.
Each of them in their own way
has taught me trust and patience.
Their soft bodies have buffered me
when the sharp edges of the world
became too much.
Grieving them was learning the art of bearing pain,
of accepting what we cannot change.
And the infinite, true quality of their love,
allowed me to love myself.
A young Afrikaans writer once wrote that our pets are a remnant of paradise. Thank you for these thoughts, I’ll be pondering the life lessons from my pets today.
