Some unlikely things that are true:
- We are composed of stardust, and we breathe it in. 40,000 tonnes of cosmic stardust falls from the sky every year.
- The human nose can remember 50,000 different scents.
- Apparently Tigers have striped skin, not just striped fur. No two patterns are the same, exactly like a fingerprint. This helps them to identify each other.
- Cats are lactose intolerant. This makes sense given that cow’s milk is from a different species.
- A poet will write a poem for you and recite it at your funeral if you die in Amsterdam with no next of kin or family to arrange the funeral or mourn.
- Sunsets on Mars are blue – the fine dust in the atmosphere on the planet absorbs blue light and scatters the warmer colours.
- The word Jurassic has an etymology from Gaulish *iuris that means ‘wooded mountain’.
- On Saturn and Jupiter, it rains diamonds. But they eventually melt down into a liquid sea in the planets’ cores.
- Cats domesticated themselves. There were two lineages of domestic cats – one that came from southwest Asia and into Europe into farming communities, and a second from Africa, mostly colonising Egypt, spreading into the Mediterranean and Old World.
- The word ‘typewriter’ is made using keys on only one row of a Qwerty keyboard or on a typewriter itself.

the human nose can recognise 50,000 different scents? Blimey, I never realised we could distinguish between that many! I imagine this tails off quite sharply later in life when all of your bits and pieces start getting wear and tear. I was touched by the Amsterdam poetry thing, that truly is a wonderful gesture. I van really appreciate that. These are all very interesting facts, especially considering one of my favourite films is Stardust, which makes the first face even more awesome 🙂

I wonder if cats’ skins are also coordinated with their fur. I’m surprised that they’re lactose intolerant, since I’ve often given cats milk to drink. And I never knew that about typewriter. Do you think it was intentional? Now I want to see what other words I can type by using the same row of keys. Well, there’s TWERP … and PEWTER … and QUERTY!

Well, we had to give our childhood cats a ‘lion cut’ once or twice and they generally have pink skin! Adorable but not co-ordinated sadly. Yeah, it’s the same with dogs, they can’t digest cow’s milk properly. There is special ‘cat milk’ in pet stores though!
