Caturday Morning

“If you want to concentrate deeply on some problem, and especially some piece of writing or paper-work, you should acquire a cat. Alone with the cat in the room where you work … the cat will invariably get up on your desk and settle placidly under the desk lamp … The cat will settle down and be serene, with a serenity that passes all understanding. And the tranquility of the cat will gradually come to affect you, sitting there at your desk, so that all the excitable qualities that impede your concentration compose themselves and give your mind back the self-command it has lost. You need not watch the cat all the time. Its presence alone is enough. The effect of a cat on your concentration is remarkable, very mysterious.” – Muriel Spark, A Far Cry from Kensington

choco3“Guilt isn’t in cat vocabulary. They never suffer remorse for eating too much, sleeping too long or hogging the warmest cushion in the house. They welcome every pleasurable moment as it unravels and savour it to the full until a butterfly or falling leaf diverts their attention. They don’t waste energy counting the number of calories they’ve consumed or the hours they’ve frittered away sunbathing.

Cats don’t beat themselves up about not working hard enough. They don’t get up and go, they sit down and stay. For them, lethargy is an art form. From their vantage points on top of fences and window ledges, they see the treadmills of human obligations for what they are – a meaningless waste of nap time.” – Helen Brown, Cleo

marmalade1“Her ears, lightly fringed with white that looked silver, lifted and moved, back, forward, listening and sensing. Her face turned, slightly, after each new sensation, alert. Her tail moved, in another dimension, as if its tip was catching messages her other organs could not. She sat poised, air-light, looking, hearing, feeling, smelling, breathing, with all of her, fur, whiskers, ears — everything, in delicate vibration.” -Doris Lessing, On Cats

  2. Lovely catties – although Muriel Spark’s cat must be fictional for my own wee cat was never that well behaved and would jump on my keyboard and start pawing the screen…concentration broken about twenty times in a row, I’d eventually give up and play with her instead of continuing with my novel. Happy Caturday!

  4. Love it. As the owner of six cats, I can relate completely. They are the absolute authorities on masterly inactivity. They appear to accomplish so much while doing so little. Wonderful post!

  9. Really needed to read this, especially the first passage, as I wrestle with my recalcitrant writing mind! 🙂
