Leap Before You Look

Sometimes, we all need to take a chance and leap before we look. If you examine your instincts, and go with what some might call ‘intuition’, sometimes that turns out to be the right thing to do. Taking chances is difficult when we don’t want to get hurt, when we don’t want to get it wrong and end up regretting our decisions. Yet sometimes it seems that people become numb to their own needs and dreams – that they just find themselves existing day to day and not being spontaneous or ready to just get up and go, even when you weren’t planning to do anything that day. I had a lecturer who said that people are trained not to listen to their intuition because we’ve been taught to do the right thing, or do the right thing for other people. What happens if that isn’t what feels right, if it feels like you’re going against yourself, or that this is not making you happy and you want to do something else? It’s fine to feel that way, in fact it is good to listen to yourself more, because life is too short to spend it constantly compromising and never doing what you want to do. Now is the time to leap before you look – take a chance. Life is happier when we live more in the moment, when we savour the spontaneous things. When time is spent doing something out of the usual, life is shook up a little bit and seems more exciting. Sometimes our first instinctive answer or thought is the best thing, and it takes time to learn to listen to those first feelings about something. When we’re children, we act more on our whims, on our first instincts, and sometimes that can make life more beautiful, more alive.

Intuition is a spiritual faculty and does not explain, but simply points the way.  ~ Florence Scovel Shinn
